  • Carbon Dioxide as Building Block for Fuels

  • Now, engineers have developed a technique powered by renewable energies such as solar or wind. A group of scientists, led by Professor Ted Sargent of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering, have found a more efficient way to convert carbon dioxide into fuel through the wonders of nanoengineering. The team has developed a technique powered by renewable energies such as solar or wind. The catalyst takes climate-warming carbon-dioxide (CO2) and converts it to carbon-monoxide (CO), a useful building block for carbon-based chemical fuels, such as methanol, ethanol and diesel. "CO2 reduction is an important challenge due to inertness of the molecule," Dr. Min Liu said. "We were looking for the best way to both address mounting global energy needs and help the environment," adds Pang. "If we take CO2 from industrial flue emissions or from the atmosphere, and use it as a reagent for fuels, which provide long-term storage for green energy, we're killing two birds with one stone." The team's solution is sharp: they start by fabricating extremely small gold "nanoneedles" -- the tip of each needle is 10,000 times smaller than a human hair. "The nanoneedles act like lightning rods for catalyzing the reaction," Liu said. When they applied a small electrical bias to the array of nanoneedles, they produced a high electric field at the sharp tips of the needles. This helps attract CO2, speeding up the reduction to CO, with a rate faster than any catalyst previously reported. This represents a breakthrough in selectivity and efficiency which brings CO2 reduction closer to the realm of commercial electrolysers. The team is now working on the next step: skipping the CO and producing more conventional fuels directly. Their work is published in the joual Nature. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • 5 Years Later, US Is Carrying Out More Airstrikes in Libya

  • The latest campaign comes four years after NATO, led by the US, Britain and France, intervened in the country’s uprising against longtime Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Since then, the country has been mired in chaos, with three different competing govements, a situation that has been exploited by extremists. "The first airstrikes were carried out at specific locations in Sirte today causing severe losses to enemy ranks," Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Seraj said on state TV on Monday, TeleSUR reported.  Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the strikes did not have "an end point at this particular moment in time." Monday’s airstrikes were the third the US has carried out against the extremist group in Libya. The last acknowledged US airstrikes in Libya were in the weste city of Sabratha in February. The new Libya campaign has been authorized by US President Barack Obama, who previously said the 2011 NATO intervention "didn't work" and was one of the things he regrets the most about his eight years in office. Daesh terrorist group seized the coastal city of Sirte, the hometown of Gaddafi, last year, making it their most important base outside Syria and Iraq. Libyan forces began an offensive to retake the city in May and terrorists of the Daesh group are now besieged in a few square miles of the center, where they hold strategic sites. Just months before leaving office, the new intervention in Libya marks the latest front Obama has started in the Middle East as US forces continue airstrikes in Syria and Iraq, while more ground troops have been sent to Iraq and special forces are fighting alongside the Kurdish-Arab coalition in northe Syria known as Syria Democratic Forces. News of the new intervention had been circulating since early this year. Back in March, joualist and founder of The Intercept website Glenn Greenwald ridiculed the West’s fresh intervention when he titled an article on the issue, “The US Intervention in Libya Was Such a Smashing Success That a Sequel I, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Militants Launch Car Bomb, Gun Attack on Somali Police Base, Ten Dead

  • Terrorist group al Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assault on the headquarters of Somalia's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Mogadishu. It was the second major operation in the city this week by the group which has kept up a guerilla war on the Weste-backed govement in the face of US drone strikes and African peacekeeping forces. Heavy gunfire rang out inside for about half an hour after the first blast, said witnesses. The bodies of four civilians lay in the street near the compound which was partially destroyed. A kiosk close to the wall caught fire. "At least 10 people including four militants, five civilians and a soldier died in today's attack," Hussein Ali, a police officer, told Reuters. Another 15 people were injured, some seriously, he added. Al Shabaab's military operations spokesman, Abdiasis Abu Musab, said one of its suicide bombers had started the attack by ramming a car bomb into the building's gate. In al Shabaab's first attack this week, 13 people were killed when two car bombs went off at the gate of the African Union's main AMISOM peacekeeping base on Tuesday. Security analysts have waed that the group could step up its attacks, taking advantage of the distraction caused by campaigning for a presidential election due in August. Al Shabaab has also launched attacks in Kenya and Uganda which have contributed troops to the 22,000-strong AMISOM force. Somalia plunged into anarchy in the early 1990s following the toppling of military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Iraq: Suicide Attack Kills At Least 21 near Baghdad

  • There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast outside Khalis, about 80 km from the capital, but Daesh (ISIL) regularly attacks security forces and civilian areas. A police officer at the scene said that most of the victims died inside their vehicles while waiting to enter the town. "We still have charred bodies inside many vehicles including a minibus packed with women and children," the police captain said, requesting anonymity. Hospital sources said the death toll was expected to rise given the extent of critical injuries. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has come under pressure to improve security since a suicide attack claimed by Daesh earlier this month killed 292 people in central Baghdad, one of the largest attacks of its kind since the US-led invasion in 2003. • Kabul Massacre: Bomb Blasts or Suicide Attacks?

  • At least 80 people were killed and hundreds more injured after three explosions struck a large demonstration march in the Afghan capital on Saturday. The peaceful protest was staged by Hazara people, a Shiite minority making up an estimated 9% of the Afghan population. According to a spokesman for the Afghan interior ministry, 231 people were wounded, though this figure could still rise. The attacks marked the deadliest in Kabul since 2001. While the Afghan govement usually points the finger of blame immediately at the Taliban after such terrorist attacks, there was no hint of the Taliban’s role this time. Moreover, Taliban Spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid issued an early statement to strongly condemn the attacks, describing them as a plot for creating rift in the Afghan society. The mainstream media, however, quoted Amaq, thought to be the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group’s news agency, as reporting that Daesh has claimed responsibility for the blasts. But the point is that Amaq is not an official agency for the Daesh militants and that it even pulled the report off the website after 30 minutes. Tasnim’s reporter in Kabul, who had been in the crowd since the beginning of the rally, has gathered surprising information on details of the incident after talking to eyewitnesses and some of the injured. Eyewitnesses at Deh Mazang Square, where the explosions happened, say explosive devices had been planted at some places beforehand. They said an ice cream cart and a motorcycle went off in the crowd, without anybody spotting any suicide bomber at the scene. These reports, however, differ from Afghan intelligence officials’ narration of the event. They claim the attacks were carried out by three suicide bombers dispatched from Daesh’s easte stronghold in Achin district. The tragic attacks were also preceded by security waings by Afghan officials, who had held the demonstration leaders accountable for any possible incident hours before the rally. According to Tasnim dispatches, Af, ...ادامه مطلب

  • Palestinian Shot Dead by Israeli Forces after Alleged Car Attack

  • The incident took place early on Wednesday at a checkpoint in the district of al-Ram. The Israeli army said in a statement that one of the border guards "felt in danger" when the driver of the car began to speed near the checkpoint, causing them to open fire. According to Ali Musilmani, head of the al-Ram municipality, the Palestinian who was shot dead was 22-year-old Anwar al-Salaymeh. "He was a newly-wed; he got married only a month ago," Musilmani told Al Jazeera. "The other youth who is now critically injured is 20 year-old-Fares Khader al-Rishq. He is now being hospitalised at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem." A third Palestinian, identified by Musilmani as 20-year-old Mohamed Nassar, was arrested at the scene. In the latest cycle of violence since October 2015, Israeli forces have killed more than 200 Palestinians, including unarmed demonstrators, bystanders and attackers. Meanwhile, more than 30 Israelis have been killed in stabbings and car ramming attacks. According to the Palestinian health ministry, nearly 17,000 people have been wounded in the violence, some 6,000 by live or rubber-coated steel bullets. Palestinians are frustrated by Israel's decades-long occupation and with peace talks going nowhere. • NASA Eyes First-Ever Carbon-Nanotube Mirrors for CubeSat Telescope

  • Led by Theodor Kostiuk, a scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, the technology-development effort is aimed at giving the scientific community a compact, reproducible, and relatively inexpensive telescope that would fit easily inside a CubeSat. Individual CubeSats measure four inches on a side. Small satellites, including CubeSats, are playing an increasingly larger role in exploration, technology demonstration, scientific research and educational investigations at NASA. These miniature satellites provide a low-cost platform for NASA missions, including planetary space exploration; Earth observations; fundamental Earth and space science; and developing precursor science instruments like cutting-edge laser communications, satellite-to-satellite communications and autonomous movement capabilities. They also allow an inexpensive means to engage students in all phases of satellite development, operation and exploitation through real-world, hands-on research and development experience on NASA-funded rideshare launch opportunities. Under this particular R&D effort, Kostiuk's team seeks to develop a CubeSat telescope that would be sensitive to the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelength bands. It would be equipped with commercial-off-the-shelf spectrometers and imagers and would be ideal as an "exploratory tool for quick looks that could lead to larger missions," Kostiuk explained. "We're trying to exploit commercially available components." While the concept won't get the same scientific retu as say a flagship-style mission or a large, ground-based telescope, it could enable first order of scientific investigations or be flown as a constellation of similarly equipped CubeSats, added Kostiuk. With funding from Goddard's Inteal Research and Development program, the team has created a laboratory optical bench made up of three commercially available, miniaturized spectrometers optimized for the ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared, ...ادامه مطلب
