Two protesters were sentenced to one year of imprisonment each last week for attending protests in the restive Diraz village, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) said late on Friday. The first verdict was pronounced on August 19, when Shiite cleric Sheikh Ali Humeidan was sentenced to jail. The second verdict was issued three days later when Shiite eulogist Abdullah Subah was convicted on charges of “holding unlawful gatherings” in Diraz. The center said Shiite clerics Sheikh Ali Naji also known as al-Himli, Sheikh Mounir al-Maatouk, and Sheikh Imad al-Shaala, together with eulogist Mullah Habib al-Dirazi are facing trial on similar charges, Press TV reported on Saturday.  The center strongly condemned the persecution of peaceful protesters in Diraz, and the Al Khalifah regime’s violation of public right to peaceful gathering. The ministry said Agriculture Minister Achim Irimescu and Kuwaiti counterpart Ali Saleh Al-Omair sustained head injuries Thursday moing in southe Romania after the car they were traveling was involved in a collision with another car, AP reported.  The ministry said both ministers were conscious and not in any danger. An interpreter traveling in the same car also had minor injuries. The three are being treated at the County Hospital in Slobozia, close to where the crash occurred. The crew of Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia’s only aircraft-carrying cruiser, is preparing for a deployment to the shores of Syria. A source in the Defense Ministry told RIA Novosti that the carrier is currently undergoing repairs and will be ready for the long-range operation by the end of September. "The carrier has arrived at the 35th dockyard to undergo a second stage of upgrades and to restore its technical readiness. All works are expected to be completed by the end of September when the ship will be ready for deployment," the source said. The confrontations took place on Thursday in the town of Beitunia near the Israeli Ofer military jail, where several Palestinian inmates are on hunger strike. Israeli forces opened fire and used tear gas to disperse the crowd, but the Palestinian demonstrators responded by throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, Press TV reported. “MasterCard does not have any activities in Iran, as sanctions have remained in place for US-based companies for some time,” Seth Eisen told Azerbaijan's Trend news agency on Monday. His remarks came after Iran’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi announced on Sunday that financial branches of the country’s Post Company will offer credit card services in late August. Credit and debit cards will be distributed at financial branches of the Iran Post Company from August 23, Vaezi said at a ceremony in Tehran. Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Tuesday, Zahra Roknabadi said Saudi Arabia’s move to sever relations with Iran should not get in the way of pursuing the Mina tragedy case. At least 7,500 pilgrims died in a crush in Mina, near Mecca, on September 24, 2015, when performing religious rites. 464 Iranian pilgrims, including Roknabadi, were among those killed in the disaster. The ex-envoy’s body was repatriated nearly two months after the incident. The Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy said on Wednesday that six of the 12 arrested in the village of Diraz were Shiite clerics, Press TV reported.  On June 20, Bahraini authorities stripped Sheikh Qassim of his citizenship, less than a week after suspending the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, the country’s main opposition bloc, and dissolving the Islamic Enlightenment Institution founded by Qassim, and the opposition al-Risala Islamic Association.
