  • Turkish Airstrikes Kill 3 PKK Militants in Southeast Turkey: Military

  • The strikes near the town of Cukurca in a mountainous part of the border province of Hakkari come after a series of attacks launched by the PKK, which has fought a three-decade insurgency for Kurdish autonomy in southeaste Turkey, Reuters reported. Turkish military has frequently carried out airstrikes after a two-and-a-half-year ceasefire and peace process between the govement and the PKK broke down last summer. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict since the PKK - designated a "terrorist group" by Turkey, the US and the European Union - began its armed campaign in 1984. Turkey's military, NATO's second largest, has continued to grapple with the low-intensity conflict in the mainly Kurdish southeast as its senior ranks undergo a major shake-up following a July 15-16 failed coup attempt. • German FM Steinmeier Calls for New Arms Control Pact with Russia

  • Writing in the German daily "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung," Steinmeier said he wanted to avert a "new and dangerous arms race" to ensure peace in Europe and beyond. He said a new nonproliferation deal on conventional arms would be "a proven means for transparency, risk prevention and trust building." In an apparent reference to Russia's annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine, Steinmeier accused Moscow of violating basic, non-negotiable principles of peace, breaking delicate bonds of trust, painstakingly built up over decades. "At the same time, we must all be united in the desire to avoid a further twist in the escalating spiral," he wrote in his opinion piece, which was published Friday, Deutsche Welle reported. Even before the Ukraine conflict, there was a sense that a new confrontation was building, Steinmeier said. He then called for a "structured dialogue, with all partners who carry responsibility for the security of our continent." New military capabilities - including the, ...ادامه مطلب

  • German Military Mulls Options If Planes Withdrawn from Turkish Base

  • A ministry spokesman said the armed forces were studying other basing options for six reconnaissance planes, a refueling plane and 250 soldiers if German lawmakers vote to end the use of the base over Ankara's refusal to allow them to visit, Reuters reported. Turkey in June denied lawmakers access to the base, angered by a German parliamentary resolution that branded the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces as genocide. Ties between the two NATO allies have also been strained by the thwarted coup in Turkey on July 15, with Ankara angry about what it called Germany's sluggish response in condemning the action. A parliamentary vote to end Germany's use of Incirlik could come as soon as next month, depending on whether Ankara allows lawmakers to visit the base in October as planned. The current parliamentary mandate for the mission ends in December. "The Bundeswehr (armed forces) wo, ...ادامه مطلب

  • China Tightens Control of Online News after Sensitive Gaffes

  • State media reported Thursday that the new rules placed responsibility squarely on head editors, saying news sites must monitor their content 24 hours a day to ensure "correct orientation, factual accuracy and appropriate sourcing." The rules come at a time when Xi is ratcheting up control over Chinese media and cyberspace, according to the Associated Press. Tencent, one of China's most popular websites, fired its top editor after a July headline mistakenly said Xi delivered a "furious" — instead of "important" — speech commemorating a Communist Party anniversary. In March, an online portal called Wujie appeared to inadvertently publish a letter calling for Xi's resignation. • Turkish PM Says Ankara Sees No Compromise with US over Gulen Extradition

  • Prime Minister Binali Yildirim made his comments to a group of Turkish joualists after announcing that US Vice President Joe Biden would visit Turkey on August 24, Reuters reported. The 75-year-old Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, denies any involvement in the failed coup. The fallout from the abortive coup, in which more than 230 people were killed as mutinous soldiers commandeered fighter jets, helicopters and tanks in a bid to seize power, has deepened a rift between Ankara and its Weste allies. Erdogan and many Turks have been frustrated by US and European criticism of a crackdown in the wake of the putsch, accusing the West of greater conce about the rights of the plotters than the gravity of the threat to a NATO member state. More than 60,000 people in the military, judiciary, civil service and education have been detained, suspended or placed under investigation since the coup. • UN Renews Call for Political Solution to Yemeni Crisis

  • “The people of Yemen continue to bear the brunt of the suffering as a result of the inability of the parties to find a political solution to a conflict that has been raging for more than a year and a half. The retu to full-scale hostilities only drives humanitarian needs further,” said Jamie McGoldrick, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen, in a statement, adding: “A political solution is the only solution to this crisis.” According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), local media has reported that ground fighting and air strikes have killed and maimed children and women, and destroyed homes and markets, particularly in the capital, Sana’a, and its goveorates, Sa’ada, Taizz, and Al Hudaydah. • Iraq Receives A New Batch of F-16 Fighter Jets from US

  • Iraq Defense Ministry's spokesman, Brig. Gen. Tahseen Ibrahim, told The Associated Press that the new batch consisted of four fighter jets. Ibraim did not give more details or say when the next shipment will be delivered. With the new arrivals, Iraq has now eight F16s in service, out of 36 fighter jets the US agreed to sell to Baghdad. Also Monday, a bomb went off at an outdoor market in the town of Youssifiyah, 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Baghdad, killing four shoppers and wounding 11, a police officer said. Two more civilians were killed in another bomb explosion in a commercial area in Baghdad's weste Eskan neighborhood. That attack also wounded eight people, another police officer said. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bore the hallmarks of Daesh, which often targets commercial areas and large gatherings. Iraq has been going through its worst crisis since summer 2014 when Daesh terrorists captured much of the country's north and the west, including the second-largest city of Mosul. Despite major ground loses since last year, Daesh still controls key areas. Iraq heavily depended on aging Russian-made Sukhoi Su-25 jets. In 2014, the country received Sukhoi Su-25 jets from Russia and Iran to help combat Daesh. Let's block ads! بخوانید, ...ادامه مطلب

  • New Drug Seems 'Game Changer' in Battle against Asthma

  • The new drug, which has been hailed as a “game changer”, could reduce the number of people who die from the condition. Three people die from asthma attacks every day, and according to Asthma UK, two thirds of the deaths are preventable. But the pill, called Fevipiprant, was shown to reduce inflammation and repair the lining of the airways in a study led by the University of Leicester. Professor Chris Brightling, senior research fellow at the institution, said, “A unique feature of this study was how it included measurements of symptoms, lung function using breathing tests, sampling of the airway wall and CT scans of the chest to give a complete picture of how the new drug works.” “This new treatment, Fevipiprant, could likewise help to stop preventable asthma attacks, reduce hospital admissions and improve day-to-day symptoms – making it a ‘game changer’ for future treatment,” he added, according to SNAPPA Science. • Austria Threatens to Block Acceleration of Turkish EU Talks

  • Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz's comments, published Sunday, risk exacerbating a row between Austria and Turkey that flared last week when Austrian Chancellor Christian Ke suggested ending Turkey's EU membership talks altogether because of the country's democratic and economic deficits. Talks on Turkish accession have made only slow progress since they began in 2005, with just one "chapter" concluded of 35 such policy areas where Turkey must adopt and implement EU rules. "I have a seat and a vote in the (EU) foreign ministers' council. There the question is whether new negotiation chapters will be opened with Turkey, and I am against it," Kurz said in an interview with Austrian daily Kurier, threatening to block the unanimous agreement required, Reuters reported. The Turkish govement's crackdown on followers of a US-based businessman whom it blames for last month's failed coup has strained relations with the 28-nation bloc, which depends on Ankara to restrict the westward flow of migrants. Turkey has so far lived up to its side of the deal with Brussels to stop illegal migration to Europe via its territory, in retu for financial aid, the promise of visa-free travel to much of the bloc and accelerated talks on membership. Visa-free access has been subject to delays however due to a dispute over Turkish anti-terrorism legislation, which some in Europe see as too broad, and the post-coup crackdown. Kurz said Turkey had not met the conditions for progress to be made. "The criteria for visa liberalization will not be fulfilled by Turkey. And the requirements for accession talks have not been met," Kurz said. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Friday accession talks were "as good as deadlocked" but he rejected calls to halt them entirely saying the bloc needed to think more broadly about how to frame its ties with Ankara. Austria's centrist coalition govement is under pressure from the resurgent anti-immigration Freedom Party, which is running , ...ادامه مطلب
